Heartbeats

Recommended new film: http://www.bfi.org.uk/llgff/films/features/1380

When best friends Francis and Marie both fall for Nicolas, the mysterious and dashing new guy in town, they find themselves drawn into a fierce battle for his affections. Unfortunately for this love struck pair, the flirtatious Nicolas is intent on keeping his intentions (and sexual preference) a secret, which of course just makes him all the more appealing. As he proved with the extraordinary I Killed My Mother, Xavier Dolan is a filmmaker of impeccable taste, and here he continues to dazzle with a film steeped in class and style. Capturing the passionate madness of young love with such honesty it is sometimes uncomfortable to watch, Heartbeats is an exhilarating piece of work. As previously suspected, at just 21 years old, Dolan looks set to become one of the defining gay filmmakers of his generation.
