Thomas Ades and Steve Reich in Birmingham

Well the truth is that it is the music of Reich rather than the man himself in Birmingham. The other piece is a joint effort by Ades and a video artist http://www.thsh.co.uk/view/ades-conducts-ades-and-reich .

For those who enjoy Reich here is a You Tube snatch. Enjoy.

  1. The concert in Birmingham was mixed. Thomas Ades conducted his own piece with video by Tal Rosner. I was unimpressed and thought it bland and predictable. It was well played. There were many Ades fans in the audience.

I was struck by the numbers of gay men present also but thought many of them had come for the Reich Music for 18 musicans.

The pre-concert talk was not by the video man who was busy in London. Instead the leader of Synergy Vocals (four female singers of the highest calibre who specialise in contemporary music) Michela Haslam gave a scintillating and learned yet accessible introduction to the Music for 18 musicians which she has performed 77 times.

The performance was wonderful and moving.
